Hanmer Springs is a natural hot spring area, I stayed for two nights and spent most of the day actually in the springs.
This area of smaller pools vary in temperature up to 42 deg. although it smells very sulphurous it is very relaxing.
Some of the pools are like huge Jacuzzis with high power water jets under the water.
The bees like the water as well and use the pools as drinking areas, one has to be careful not to sit on them.
There are other areas more like conventional swimming pools.
On the morning of my departure, I took a forest walk to a local viewpoint. With views down the valley in both directions. Whichever direction you look on South Island there will be mountains in view. Most between 1500m to 3000m.
