Perth to Albany

We left the camper van depot late morning on 10th June with the intention of driving south of Perth to Albany. By the time we had stopped off at supermarkets and loaded the van with provisions it was early afternoon when we got moving. We stopped that night at The Shady Acre Caravan Park at a small town called Williams on the Albany Highway.

The next morning we continued our journey, stopping at a rest area  with an information centre at lunch time. We were told the the unmade road to the Stirling Ranges was well graded and OK for our van so we decided to take that route as a diversion.

This is the unmade road, with the Stirling Mountain Range in view.

We stayed at The Stirling Range Caravan Park for one night on the 11th June where there was a beautiful sunset.

The next day we drove into the mountains we went to the viewpoint 439m up Bluff Knoll. There is a track from the view point which leads to the top of the mountain at an altitude of 1095m. A few years ago I would done this walk but not any more. The track must follow the mountain around the back as this side is vey steep. Tatty Bear got in on the picture again.

There are some pictures of the start of the walk below.

We then went to the Porongurup mountain range which is smaller than the Stirling Range and forested, mostly with Karri Trees. These trees although quite big are small compared to some that we encounter later on our journey. This picnic area is known as the Tree in the Rock. Below is a picture of a karri tree growing out of the middle of a rock.

The picnic area. This shows the karri trees have a very high canopy and very little foliage at at low levels which makes a very open forest.

We continued our journey and camped at the Albany Gardens Holiday Park for 2 nights on the 12th June.
