After leaving Broome I headed for the Bungle Bungles camping at Derby (pronounced Durr bee) for one night. On the way I stopped at the Boab Prison Tree which was a rest point for escorted prisoners on their way to Derby.
This area has enormous termite mounds and the local aboriginal people used these as burial sites, they would cut a hole in the side of an active mound and place the body inside, the termites would repair the hole very quickly and intern the body.
This is also the site of the longest cattle trough in the world.
Water is pumped up from a bore with this windmill.
Derby was a nice little town, the main streets lined with boab trees.
After one night at Derby I moved on to Mabel Down camping one more night on the way at The Ord river free camp.
